Google PageRank - some myths and truths

PageRank (PR) is a trademark of the search engine Google. Basically, PageRank is an algorithm or formula that calculates the importance of a webpage based on the number of links linking to the page, and the PageRank of the linking pages themselves. The Google PageRank is based on a scale of 0 to 10. It is based on logarithmic scale - which means that getting higher PageRank needs significantly large number of backlinks (that is, pages linking to your page). Assuming 10 as the base of the logarithmic scale, you can get PageRank of 1 from 1 backlink, PageRank of 2 from 10 backlinks, PageRank of 3 from 100 backlinks and so on. So you will need 1,000,000,000 backlinks to get a PageRank 10. In practice however, the base is less than 10, and there are other factors too, so you won't need that many links. Some sites with PageRank perfect 10 are such as the home page of Google.com and Adobe.com

Mathematically, PageRank is an iterative or repeated process which determines the final PageRank. Also PageRank is updated continuously by Google so your PageRank of your webpage will change over time.

Let's look at some myths and truths about PageRank.

My website has PageRank 0, I will never get high rank in Google or Yahoo!

That is so wrong. PageRank is NOT the same as search ranking. Your website can rank on the top in search ranking for a search term but still have a PageRank 0. Getting a high PageRank does mean that your site has many backlinks, or that your site is considered important, but it doesn't mean your site will rank well for your target keyword. Sites with good content will have good results in search engines irrespective of the PageRank.

In fact the PageRank doesn't take in account of the keywords at all - it just makes calculation based on the number of backlinks and the PageRank of the backlinks. While PageRank is one of the factors used to determine the search results in Google, it is not the only one. You should be worried if your site is not listed at all, not if you don't have high PageRank.

Also, except Google, other search engines don't understand PageRank at all.

But it says page rank! isn't it the same as website rank?

Not really. Like said, it is a process of calculating importance of a page based on the number of backlinks or so called the "votes" for a page. Whereas ranking on the website is about being seen in search engines when someone searches for search terms (known as keywords). If you have a website related to selling coins, you want your site to appear on top when someone searches for "old coins", or "buy coins". As long as that happens, getting higher PageRank is a secondary subject.

It would be worth noting that PageRank was so termed because it was initiated by one of the founders of the Google - Larry Page. It could so easily have been termed LarryRank!

Isn't PageRank same for all pages in my site?

No. PageRank is based on calculation of value of each page in the world wide web. It is perfectly normal to have different PageRank for different page within the same site. In fact that is how PageRank works.

It is the part of the webmaster or the SEO analyst to organize the pages in the website to get the best results.

My Google toolbar shows a different PageRank!

Google toolbar shows an old value of PageRank rather than the live value. You might want to check PageRank in sites such as www.prchecker.info or http://livepr.ezer.com/ to find your current PageRank.

Also it should be noted that Google shows PageRank from the closest datacenter (server). So if you are checking PageRank from Germany, it may not be same as that from USA or Nepal. You can have different PageRank from different datacenter.

Can I increase my PageRank? How?

Of course you can! Since PageRank depends upon backlinks, the only way is to increase number of backlinks.

For that all you need to do is write good/useful content or articles and promote them. Organize your website. Get good traffic into your site. Submit to search engines and directories. Use social networking sites to spread words about your articles. As other site find your site useful and link to your site, you will get better PageRank. You can use link exchange with other related sites. But never use link reciprocals to get cheap or spam links to your site.

Will my PageRank decrease when I link to other site?

Your site's PageRank will not decrease directly by linking to other site. PageRank depends on backlinks and their PageRank. The outgoing links in your site don't affect PageRank of your site. It is the incoming links or the links to your site that contribute to your PageRank, not the outgoing.

As far as incoming links are concerned, internal linking to your own site also contribute to your site's PageRank. So you have to understand how to build and organize your internal linking well.

However, if you are linking to bad sites on bad purpose, you will be kicked out of the search engines altogether sooner or later. So if you have a good site, don't link to bad sites and check that you don't get linked from bad sites either.

What about PigeonRank? Is it important too?

Ok. This isn't a myth really. Just that Google comes up with something to fool their users every now and then during April Fool's day. On April 1st 2002, Google came up with this wacky idea called PigeonRank™ that was supposed to be the heart of Google's fast search algorithm!

Another April is coming near. So be prepared for surprises from Google!

The bottom line is that PageRank is a methood developed by Google that ranks a webpage based on the number of backlinks it has got. Getting high PageRank is very desirable for getting popularity, but it is not enough to ensure that your website will get listed or rank well for given keyword.

Web 3.0 & Beyond - Are Machines Ruling Us Already?

The Year: 1982. Time Magazine says that the person of the year (or machine of the year rather) is The Computer. Back then computer was becoming so popular. People believed computers could provide answers to many of the questions, send letters at speed of light etc etc. Then there was personal computer becoming reality and accessible. Computers were helping people in day to day life. All sorts of calculations and computing jobs. Life was getting easier. Then there were games, internet, emails and stuffs like that. All good.

In the years to follow, internet really gained momentum. The world was turning into a so called global village. Businessmen thought we have to have website to reach a wider clients around the globe. And indeed web was becoming the number one source for information. Thus we had Web 1.0.

The Year: 2006. Time Magazine says that the person of the year is YOU. It was talking about the Web 2.0 generation by now. There were people generated pages scattered everywhere on the internet. There were blogs, there were social networking sites like the Myspace, hi5, user generated sites like wikipedia, youtube, flickr, community sites likes delicio.us, digg and countless others. Almost everyone were busy writing content more than reading contents. People were starting to live their lives based on computers. People knew each other from web. Some were racing the web race, while others who were left behind were finding it harder to catch up. Everything was moving fast.

The computers got smaller. People got mobile - always on the run. Now people were even using their tiny hand held devices to do things. YOU were getting busier. The Web 2.0 phenomenon was racing.

Last Edition of Time Magazine

The Year: Very near future. Time magazine released its last print edition of the magazine. The end of the Web 3.0 & start of the Web 4.0. But what did we have on Web 3.0? Initially there were people trying to sort all the mess created by Web 2.0. People thought they will build a more easier web world, where everything is organized. They called it semantic web. People could do just about anything on the web. All data & information were synchronized. They were trying to make the computers & the machines act like human. The way human thought. Computers now had intelligence. When one typed their name all the details would pop up. From the likes and dislikes to all the secrets. When you transferred someone's photo from you digital camera, the computer would immediately say - "Hey I know that person..he came to this house yesterday too. He's a weird person. In fact I hate that person..." Machines talked, machines walked, machines did all the things. Humans were left behind.

Actually it might not be as weird as it sounds now. We might actually be heading towards a better collaborative world wide web. We all hope for a safer & smarter web for humans. Just that we need to make sure machines are there to make the human lives easier; rather than machine dependent.

Google giving wrong results?

I was trying to search for some info on Paula Abdul, one of the judges of the American Idol show. When I searched for Paula Abdul in Google, to my surprise i get IMDb results on the first place, instead of her official pages or her wiki page. I guess its ok. But look what i got on the 2nd result.

An official fansite of Mandy Moore?! How on earth could that be related to Paula Abdul? Both are singers? Well that's no good to get mooreofmandy.com into 2nd rank. There is no mention of Paula Abdul in that site either. So it doesn't make any sense. Either the Google got it all wrong in its search algorithms or perhaps the Mandy Moore Fansite did some dirty trick to fool Google. In either case the results are very wrong to say the least. If it is some dirty tricks by Moore Fansite, which I don't think it did, then Google should be able to correct it by now, or it may be exploited more by other sites to get higher ranks. If it is some problem with Google's search algorithms, then we got serious problem.

Other search engines gave desired results. So i believe this is problem with Google only. What if Google, the most trusted search engine started to give wrong results? What if Google results were full of scammers? Scary...

Misuse of Technology

While ultrasound can be an effective technology in examining internal body parts, and even to find the condition of an unborn child; this has been used for abortion test in many developing countries where the gender bias is still on.

While abortion is legal in most part of the world, its really sad to know how the technology is being misused to carry out unhuman activity. Hundred of thousands of abortions of abortions are carried out each year depending upon ultrasound results of whether the unborn child is a girl or a boy. How pathetic!

I also came across this story of a weird looking child who died immediately after his birth. I'm not sure about the scientific reasons behind such child birth, but the child somehow looks more like a frog than a human.

For a first thought i thought it was not a spam since it looked like a genuine email source. but since i had no activity from my email address, i was not so sure. later i found that it was actually a fraud spam mail. man, these spam mails can be so tricky at times. the ones with the headings like "get millionaire in a day" are so easy to know to be spam but the ones like these can certainly get you. even with a high filtering sometimes these just pop in your inbox sometimes.

do u get spam mails like these too?

Hello? Your brain is now safe

Ya ya the researchers say so. cell phones are now brain cancer safe. The earlier issues that say that radiation from cell phones cause brain tumor are false. U can now pick up your phone and stick it to your head 24/7. Well that's a good news alrite.

I also heard of another weird news that the US government wants Google data of searched web! Wow! you mean someone 'googles' for something, he/she will be continuously monitored. who need hackers and crackers if you can legally monitor what people are doing on the web?

And they say time never waits for anyone...

well as we have all finally welcomed the new day of the new year, you might have noticed that we have all reached here a whole 1(ONE) second late than we expected. yes friends...1 second late. but now that we've safely arrived 1 second late, seems like some people are not happy about it. they want their precious second back!

the "second" thing is due to actually a complex process where human are more getting more cleverer than the actual "time". so in 1949 came this thing called atomic clock which happens to be very very accurate.

since the man-made time clock is more accurate than the time clock of universe, which apparently takes breaks from time to time, the 'intelligent scientists' are busy making adjustments to their clocks according to it.

i don't have problems with 'the second' this way or that. well a better adjustment i hope would be if it was the same time everywhere in the earth. so that i can say happy new year to everyone around the world right at the moment its new year here. not hours before or after the new year. if i get a call from my friend in America saying happy new year when I'm about to sleep here in Asia then its not so fun.

as for new year resolutions, well i made one to quit alcohol, and broke it on the very 1st day! how long can you hold onto your resolutions? one second?

G-Mania.

With the Google slowly but surely taking over the world, the latest being the Google buying of AOL stake its not too hard to see all the G-mania going on. So i thought since the word G(oogle) seems to be overtaking M(icrosoft) why not list some more G words.

G8
Group of eight of the most industrialized nations including USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and Russia. With the latest news that China has overcome Italy, China might be on that list too. Or may be G9?

G-Mail
A popular over 2Gb free mail by Google. Such as nepalsites@gmail.com of this site!

GSM
Global System for Mobile. A mobile technology. Some others are GPRS and CDMA.

GATT
General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. An international collaboration for fair trade. Well everybody saw the recent Hong-Kong demonstration against the increasing unfairness.

GDP
Gross Domestic Product. Very important factor for measuring the economic status of a country.

G-Suit
A special pressurized suit worn by astronauts and pilots to balance the forces of gravity. They would probably be like a crushed can beer if they went on outer space in their regular suit & ties.

GMT
Greenwich Mean Time. The standard time used around the world.

GMAT
Graduate Management Admission Test. A populat test required to graduate business or management programs.

GCA
Ground Controlled Approach. Emergency landing of an aircraft. Especially during bad weather.

GAD
Generalized Anxiety Disorder. A mental anxiety disorder such as extreme fear, tension or nervousness.

G-SPOT
Grafenberg Spot. An area on front wall of the vagina, between the opening and the cervix, which is extremely sensitive to stimulation.

G-String
A tiny piece of cloth worn (by stipers) to cover the genitals. Talking about male stipers and gay people the news of 'marriage' of singer Elton John & David Furnish isn't less weird either.

And turning the attention to the blogging world I've got ramblingsandrhetoric "IN THE HOUSE". Check it out on my blog!!

Ubuntu is Here...

Finally this evening my packet containing Ubuntu Linux arrived. seemed like the packet had (mis)traveled to Malaysia before arriving here in nepal. not many desktop PC users are using linux over here. i'd tried a few linux distros previously, and the buzz these days is definitely with this ubuntu, which was also won the Linux Journal Reader's Choice Award. besides, even the slogan "Ubuntu - Linux for Human Beings" does sounds catchy & likable, doesn't it?

i wanted to install the new system on my computer right away but my CD-ROM has been in the junkyard lately. i might buy a new one perhaps this week... i got 5 CDs so i'm definitely gonna make few frens try this new linux in the town! actually there are two CDs in each CD case, one for the regular install and one for the try out version, that is dual install with windows. i'm definitely going for the install CD...

Yo! 2 thumbs up 4 OPEN-SOURCE!

Online Nepal Vs In Line Nepal

The online business in nepal seems to be speeding up with old players like muncha.com and thamel.com being joined by new online shopping sites like the unicornfelt.com, creationnepal.com, ghardailo.com and nepalscraft.com. this indeed is a good news for people around the globe. and then again there are other sites like the ebay.com and amazon.com and shopping.yahoo.com that were there forever...

http://www.muncha.com

that's one side of the story. an online shopping nepal in pace with the rest of the world; then there is an in-line shopping nepal, the ones that are still having to stand in long queue for getting thier basic needs like water, food and cooking gases..such a pity that u toss a coin and see heads and tails of two different animals, one shopping online and another shopping in line...

LET THERE BE EQUALITY!

Time to Switch to Cable May be...

dial up users! it might just be the right time to switch your connection to a faster broadband or cable connection. with the ISP like Mercantile, World Link and Vianet providing cable connections at reduced rates, it might be the time to check the nearest outlet to find the details and move up with the pace of rest of the universe!

Mercantile

World Link

Vianet

As for the real freaks it might even be worth to shoot two step ahead for the wireless connection...after all the world is now heading for the Wi-Fi and Wi-Max era.
